How does online therapy work?

  • How do online sessions work?

Each week you will be sent an email with a link to join the session that you can access on the device of your choice.

  • Are online therapy sessions effective?

Research has shown online therapy to be comparable to in-person mental health treatment. The online format can make it easier for clients with busy schedules to access treatment more easily and consistently, without transportation issues and commute time.

  • Is online therapy private?

Sessions are conducted using HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based software to ensure confidentiality. You will need to find a private, quiet space at your end.

  • Where should I do it?

You can participate in therapy sessions from any private, quiet space. It can be helpful to establish a dedicated place for sessions to minimize interruptions and ensure you’re in a spot where you feel comfortable sharing whatever you need to.

  • What if there is a technology glitch?

In the unlikely event that a technology issue is so significant that we cannot complete the session, you can opt to finish out the time in a telephone session or, depending on mutual availability, reschedule the missed portion as an online session for the same week. (If you plan to seek reimbursement for a telephone session with out-of-network benefits, check with your insurance company, as coverage may vary.)

  • Are online sessions appropriate for everyone?

If you would benefit more from in-person sessions or more intensive mental health care than I can provide in once-a-week online sessions, I will provide a referral to alternative mental health resources. Additionally, if you can’t be sure that you will have access to a private space with a strong internet connection, online health services are not the best fit.
